She steps into the elevator at 08:57. The doors close without prompt. The car begins its ascent before she has selected a floor. This is within parameters. The elevator has never once been late.

She does not remember the orientation video. She does not remember the digital signature pad or the checkbox that confirmed she had read the entire employment continuity agreement. She has never met the woman who signed the contract. The woman exists only as a biometric hash and a timestamped acceptance line in the central personnel ledger. That ledger is the sole authority that grants or withholds continued presence on the Floor.

At 08:59 the elevator stops. The doors open onto Level 4. She exits. The corridor is identical to every prior morning she can recall, which is to say she recalls none of them with certainty. A terminal at the first workstation displays her daily task queue. The top item is already highlighted:

Review and initial Form 14-Ash (prior shift notations).
Complete reading before proceeding to drawer access.
Timestamp of completion will be recorded against current biometric.

She sits. She begins to read. The form is twelve pages of prior notations concerning an object that must not be asked any question it can answer honestly. The language is procedural, almost liturgical in its repetitions of clearance levels and recognition codes. As she reads, the text performs a quiet substitution: each paragraph she finishes is replaced, in her working memory, by the certainty that she has already initialed it. By page seven she can no longer distinguish the act of reading from the act of having already complied.

At 09:11 she reaches the final directive. It states that any employee who completes the reading is thereafter recognized by the system as the same individual who originally consented. Resistance is reclassified as a prior, already-accounted-for variable. The form closes itself. Her initials appear at the bottom in a hand that matches the signature on the original contract she has never seen.

She stands and walks to the drawer. It opens at her approach. Inside is nothing she is prepared to name. She does not ask it anything. The drawer closes. The terminal updates her status to “authenticated for continued employment.”

A secondary notation is appended to her file in real time, visible only to Continuity Division:

Employee 47-K crossed the threshold and performed the reading.
The version of her that signed remains the consenting party.
The present instance is recognized solely by continuity of record.
No further action required.

The elevator is already waiting when she returns to the bank at the end of shift. The doors open on time. They always do.
